Tar Heel Bikeshare Project
This project started as an RHA program under my guidance but developed into a campus-wide bikeshare initiative.
Tar Heel Bikes launched in August 2012 to give students access to healthy, sustainable, convenient alternative transportation options around UNC Chapel Hill. The program is sponsored by the Residence Hall Association, New Student and Carolina Parent Programs, The ReCYCLEry NC, Housing and Residential Education, The Strowd Roses Foundation, and RESPC. Originally, this program that I supervised was available to on-campus residents and had several locations on north and south campus for residents to rent bikes free of charge. In 2017, this program was expanded with the partnership with Gotcha Bike. Today, there are 18 different locations for pedestrians to reserve a bike and this program is available for anyone to use. After signing up for the program on the user-friendly app app.socialbicycles.com members can enjoy 1 hour of ride time a day for free or 2 hours of free ride time with a $30 yearly membership.
I am excited to be involved in the development and continued growth of this program. This initiative is another way that students, faculty, and visitors are able to conveniently chose a sustainable means of transportation.
