Breaking News at 29th March 2008
The silly
season has started again. Currently a spate of fraudulent emails are
being received by a number of our customers.
Some of these emails state that the recipient has won the National
Lottery, or that a cheque has been awarded for some obscure reason,
and even that money needs to be repatriated from a far flung
country.
It is worth noting that emails like this are designed to offer the
prospect of huge sums of money, whilst in reality the senders of
emails such as these are attempting to acquire your personal details
for reasons that are less than law abiding.
Many people have been taken in by emails promising money for
nothing, and after the alleged transactions have been completed, the
reality of these scams becomes apparent.
One such email promising money for nothing, makes a statement about
the passing of a "rich client" whom has a vast fortune. The
statement usually goes on to say that the client passed away without
any traceable relatives, and that the person writing the email to
you claims to be solicitor to the deceased.
The solicitor quickly states that you are required to provide
personal details in order for the transaction to begin, and that
after everything is completed, you will be entitled to a share in
the "fortune".
Dozens of people have felt the obligation to provide "help" to these
people, expecting to get money for nothing. However, after lots of
communication back and forth, the only money changing hands, will be
from the person thinking they are "helping out".
This can be accomplished in two ways:
1) When you are requested to telephone the details in an email, the
telephone number may be charging you upwards of £1.50 a minute - if
you are on the phone for twenty minutes a day for just ten days that
is a total cost of £300!
2) The recipient will be asked to provide a "security deposit" to
prove sincerity. As soon as the deposit is provided though, it is
usually the last time the victim of this sort of scam will have
contact with the persons that initiated the scam.
The final thing to note is that these sorts of scams, even if they
are genuine, are fraudulent. Engaging in any sort of fraudulent
activity is illegal and could land you in prison, a large fine, or
both.
Our advice is beware of any and all emails offering money for
nothing. We do recommend that you forward any such emails to your
local police, as the more the local authorities know about this, the
better they will be able to deal with it.
If you are in any doubt about this, or have been getting emails like
this, send us an
email and we will do our best to
provide you with a recommendation. Do note however, that our
recommendations are NOT legal advice in any way shape or form. You
should always seek legal advice from a practicing law firm.
An example of the sort scam emails described above is given below:
